Malika, then 18, moved to Canada in 2001 to study music at McGill University. After graduating in 2005 with a B.A. in jazz interpretation, Malika spent a few months in France. After returning to Montreal, Malika saw a Kalmunity Vibe Collective presentation and decided to join them. Malika, along with other members of the collective formed Groundfood.
Malika was invited by Michael League to be the lead singer for a new group called Bokante (“Exchange”) in Guadeloupean Creole. The band released their debut album Strange Circles in June 2017. They then went on a European tour the next month.
Malika released her debut solo album Sur La Voie Ensoleillee (“On the High/Sunny Road”) in June 2014. She was joined by Groundfood and Erik Hove. She went on an international tour in July with Snarky Puppy. They were part of three major European festivals, including the Nice Jazz Festival (France), the Lugano Jazz Festival(Switzerland), and the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam (Low Countries), on 9 July. Then she traveled to South America where she performed at Festival Latinidades in Brasilia (Brazil), on 26 July. Malika was invited to the Jazz Ahead festival, Rio de Janeiro in September 2015.
