He played in the National Hockey League for ten years. His father Jerry Wilson played three NHL games for the Montreal Canadiens during the 1950s and was later the team doctor for Winnipeg Jets.

His son Colin plays hockey for the Colorado Avalanche. Colin was the seventh overall selection in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft by the Nashville Predators. Colin’s second season, the BU Terriers won a national championship.

Wilson immediately made an impact, scoring his second NHL shift in just his first game against Bob Froese, the Philadelphia Flyers. After finishing the season with Calgary, he scored 72 points the following season and was awarded the Rookie-of-the-Month award for October 1984. Wilson was a valuable contributor to the Flames until he got traded to Hartford Whalers during the 1987-88 season. He was traded to the New York Rangers a little more than a year later. He had a great season, scoring 55 points in 41 games for the Rangers in 1988-89. Wilson was traded to the Whalers after he played one more season for them. After playing 45 games for the Whalers in 1990-1991, Wilson was traded to the Flames. He played a few more seasons there before retiring in 1992-1993 due to a knee injury. Wilson was in retirement from the Whalers in 1990-91 to play seven games with the Manitoba Moose in the IHL. This was his first time ever playing in the minor leagues.

Wilson is an unusual player in that he was a member of the Canadian Hockey League and NCAA before he made his NHL debut. In 1978-79, Wilson played five games in the Calgary Wranglers’ Western Hockey League. He then went on to play two seasons for Dartmouth College. The Chicago Blackhawks drafted him as the 67th overall pick in the 1980 NHL Entry Draft. He was the first Canadian World Junior Hockey Team to win a Gold Medal in 1982. After playing college hockey, he was a member of the HIFK Finnish SM-liiga team and then he joined the Canadian National Hockey Team for the 1983-84 season. This led to him participating in the 1984 Winter Olympics, Sarajevo, Yugoslavia. In the opening game, he scored a hat-trick in a 4-2 win over the United States. He joined the Calgary Flames after the Olympics, after he was traded by the Blackhawks in 1982 for Denis Cyr.

Wilson is the son NHL player Jerry Wilson. Geoff Wilson, his twin brother, was also a hockey player. He played in Finland’s SM-liiga (1982-83) alongside HIFK.
