Garrison was born January 23, 1960, and grew up in Wheeling, West Virginia. After graduating from Wheeling Park High School in 1978, Garrison was first involved in acting. He also played a small part in Starship Invasions (1977). On a full scholarship, he studied theater at Ohio University. He was given a small part as a convict for Robert Redford’s 1980 prison film Brubaker. He graduated from Ohio University in 1982 and was cast as Tommy in The Karate Kid (1984). Although William Zabka and he tried for the role, it was not the right choice. This role was reprised by Garrison in the Season 2 YouTube web series Cobra Kai. Tommy, his Karate Kid character, is best remembered for saying “Get him a bag, yeah!” During the final fight between Ralph Macchio’s Daniel LaRusso of Zabka and Johnny Lawrence from the original Karate Kid movie. Later, he stated that the line, which he heard as his character was offscreen, wasn’t part of the original script. Two months later, I looped it in. John [Avildsen] was with me in the recording booth and said that he needed two seconds. I replied, “Get him a bodybag!” I succeeded on my first attempt. John declared, “That’s going be a great line.” That line will never be forgotten.

Acting was not his main occupation in the latter part of his life. He appeared in the No More Kings 2007 music videos (that parodied The Karate Kid), Sweep the Leg (2011), The Pledge (2011) and the short film The Static which was released in 2016. His fans interacted via social media where he expressed his desire for the role in the third season on YouTube Originals’ series Cobra Kai. The Cobra Kai series is inspired by the adult lives of characters from The Karate Kid and takes place many decades after the original film. His last performance was in Season 2 of Cobra Kai. He played Tommy again. Jon Hurwitz, a Cobra Kai producer, revealed that Garrison had been scheduled to appear on Season 3 of Cobra Kai after his death.

Garrison’s acting career continued into the 1980s and 1990s. He appeared in films like The Karate Kid Part II (1986), and Iron Eagle (1986). He was also a part of the television series Coach, St Elsewhere and MacGyver, as well as Kung Fu: The Legend continues.
