Capers Funnye is one of the most popular and richest Rabbi who was born on April 14, 1952 in Chicago, Illinois, United States. Funnye’s current congregation was established by Rabbi Horace Hasan, now from Mumbai (now Bombay), India in 1918. It used to be called the Ethiopian Hebrew Settlement Workers Association. Members include African Americans as well as Hispanics and Jews born to whites. The majority of the congregation have converted to Judaism. The congregation is not involved in missionary activity, as is Judaism’s custom. Converts must have studied Judaism for at least one year before they can undergo a traditional conversion. This requires men to circumcise ritually and women to immerse themselves in a mikvah. The synagogue “is somewhere between Conservative and Modern Orthodox”, with distinct African-American influences. While men and women sit apart as in Orthodox synagogues and a chorus sings spirituals to a beat of a drum, They are located in a synagogue that was built by an Ashkenazi congregation in Marquette Park. Funnye said they are not interested in joining any mainstream synagogue organization because they don’t feel the need.

Funnye was appointed assistant rabbi to Beth Shalom B’nai Zaken Ethiopian Hebrew Congregation, Chicago, in 1985. It now has 200 members and is one of the largest black synagogues the United States. The congregation is dominated by African Americans. Funnye was the first African American member of the Chicago Board of Rabbis. He also serves on the boards of the Jewish Council on Urban Affairs, and the American Jewish Congress of the Midwest. Funnye was the first black official rabbi to be recognized in Chicago by the larger Jewish community in 1996.

His family moved to Chicago as part of the Great Migration of African Americans to industrial cities out of the South. He grew up on the South Side. There he got to see more of his mother’s extended family in Chicago, including future First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama, his first cousin once removed. His mother Verdelle (Robinson) Funnye was a sister of Fraser Robinson Jr., Michelle (Robinson) Obama’s paternal grandfather; their family also was from Georgetown and had Gullah ancestry. He is 12 years older than Michelle. While their families frequently visited when they were young, the two of them got to know each other more as adults. In 1992 she married Barack Obama, the future President of the United States (2009-2017). Funnye and they were involved in community organizing.

In 1995, Funnye was a co-founder, with Michelle Stein-Evers of California and Robin Washington of Boston, of the National Conference of Black Jews. Washington is also Jewish and is the editor of the African-American newspaper, Bay State Banner. They have worked to broaden the conversation among black Jews and Black Hebrews across the country, as well as to build bridges to conventional Judaism, made up predominately of whites. Funnye said, “I am a Jew, and that breaks through all color and ethnic barriers.”

Capers C. funnye Jr. (/f@ ‘n eI/; born April 14, 1952), is an African-American Rabbi who leads the 200-member Beth Shalom B’nai Zaken Ethiopian Hebrew Congregation in Chicago, Illinois. He is assisted by Joshua V. Salter and Avraham Ben Israeli.

He is the chief rabbi of International Israelite Board of Rabbis. The Commandment Keepers Congregation of the Living God was founded in Harlem in 1919 by Wentworth Arthur Matthew. It was incorporated in 1930, and then moved to Brooklyn where Matthew founded a seminary. There had been very little contact with white Jewish congregations after Matthew’s 1973 death. They were opposed to Black Jewish claims of historical descent from ancient Israel. Funnye spent five years studying long-distance with Levy, and Levy was able to ordained him through the Israelite Rabbinical Academy of Brooklyn in 1985. Levy founded it. The Academy has no ties to any major Jewish denomination.

With the goal of building bridges to United States Judaism, in 1985 Funnye undertook a second formal conversion to Judaism that was certified by a Conservative rabbinical court. He had also studied Judaism more intensively in Chicago, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Jewish Studies and Master of Science in Human Service Administration from the Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies there. Funnye has said that he felt a sense of intellectual and spiritual liberation in the constant examination that Judaism encouraged.
