After impressing at trial, Howieson signed a Burnley scholarship for two years in July 2011. In November 2011, Howieson scored his first goal in the youth team’s 6-1 victory over Preston North End. - This helped the Clarets reach the semi-finals for first time since 1978. In March 2012, Liverpool and Newcastle were interested in Howieson’s performances in the FA Youth Cup. Howieson signed professional terms on 29 March 2012 with Burnley. This two-and-a half-year contract kept him at the club through June 2014. Howieson was placed on the bench for Burnley’s match away to Portsmouth on 31 March. However, he was not used as a substitute. Three days later, he made his senior debut in a 3-1 defeat to Birmingham City in the Football League Championship. He replaced Josh McQuoid in the 84th minute. He became the youngest Kiwi ever to play in the Football League, at 17 years and 103, surpassing the record of 22 days set by Chris Wood, West Bromwich Albion, in April 2009. He was also the youngest Burnley player for a quarter century.
On 21 February 2013, he joined League One side Doncaster Rovers on a youth loan until the end of the season.
Howieson started his career with Mosgiel AFC, whilst attending Otago Boys’ High School for two years, before departing for the Lincoln-based Asia–Pacific Football Academy in 2010. He was spotted by football scout Graham McMann – a former under-16 coach at Burnley – whilst playing in the under-14 South Island tournament in Timaru. McMann continued to track his progress at the APFA for two years, where he had formerly worked as a scout. McMann got in touch with his contacts at Football League side Burnley, who agreed to give Howieson a week on trial in April 2011. He made an instant impression on the club’s coaching staff after scoring two goals in a trial match against Carlisle United.
Howieson was selected to the New Zealand senior team for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers on 14 May 2012. Howieson was a substitute for 72 minutes in the All White’s international friendly versus El Salvador on 24 May 2012. He was also a substitute in the second half at the 2012 OFC Nations Cup.

Howieson was born in Blenheim (New Zealand) to a Samoan mother and a Scottish- born father. He is eligible to represent New Zealand and Scotland as well as England, England, and Samoa under FIFA eligibility rules. Howieson was selected to the New Zealand team for the OFC U-17 Championship 2011, hosted by New Zealand in January 2011. In New Zealand’s opening game, he scored a header against Vanuatu. As New Zealand advanced to the final, he was present in three of the remaining group games. Their fourth title was won by a 2-0 win over Tahiti. Howieson scored a 30-yard free kick. However, Howieson was expelled from the squad after he received two bookings in group stage. Howieson received overtures from a Scottish Football Association Scout in 2012 about changing his international loyalty to Scotland. He said that he wanted to represent New Zealand at 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup, which was held in his country.
Howieson was selected to the New Zealand Under 23 squad for the Summer Olympic Games 2012 in London on 21 June 2012. Howieson was a substitute in each of the three fixtures for New Zealand during the games. This included a 45-minute appearance against Brazil, which resulted in a 3-0 loss. After only one point, New Zealand was eliminated from their group following a 1-1 draw against Egypt.
Howieson signed a professional two-and-a-half-year contract with Burnley in March 2012, having joined from the Asia–Pacific Football Academy in July 2011, having previously played for Mosgiel AFC. He made his first-team debut in April 2012. He has represented New Zealand at the 2011 OFC U-17 Championship and 2011 FIFA U-17 World Cup.
