Birmingham declined to sign another year on Preston’s contract after the 2014-15 season. After a trial, he signed an one-year contract at League Two club Crawley Town. He started the season as the second-choice goalkeeper behind Newcastle United loanee Freddie Woodman. However, Woodman was on international duty with England’s under-19 team and he made his senior Crawley debut at the Football League Trophy. On 6 October 2015, the match ended in a 3-0 loss at home to League One guests Southend United. Woodman was still out, so Preston made his Football League debut against Leyton Orient four days later. Tim Krul, Newcastle United’s goalkeeper, suffered a ruptured anteriorcruciate ligament that day. Woodman was then recalled by his parent club. Preston became Crawley’s senior goalkeeper. Preston was replaced by Darryl Flahavan, who was signed by Crawley.

On 3 August 2016, Preston joined National League North club Altrincham as competition for Andrew Dawber, but he played only once, in a 6–0 defeat at home to A.F.C. Fylde on 16 August, and was released a few days later. He returned to the Football League in September, when he joined Stevenage of League Two as goalkeeping cover on non-contract terms.

Preston returned to the starting eleven for the 2–1 win against Stevenage on 26 December, and kept his place for the next match two days later even though Flahavan’s injured ankle had recovered enough for him to be named among the substitutes. After Flahavan took too long deciding whether to accept a contract extension, the club withdrew the offer, and Preston started the match away to Yeovil Town on 23 January 2016. At the end of the 2015–16 season, Preston was released by Crawley having made 10 appearances for the Sussex club.

He spent 2014 on work experience at Conference North Club Worcester City. While the club was lacking all its senior goalkeepers, he played twice in the league as well as in the Worcestershire Senior Cup. In June 2014, he signed his first professional contract of one year, with the possibility of a second. Preston signed a month-long loan to Conference Premier club AFC Telford United in February 2015. He was unable to play in league matches, but played in the final Shropshire Senior Cup.

Preston was born in Stafford in England but was raised in Welshpool, Wales. He attended Welshpool High School, and was a member of the local cricket team.
