Smith was a semi-finalist in the Walter Brown Award for American-born college hockey players. Smith was selected to the All Tournament Team as well as Tournament MVP for the 2017 Hockey East Men’s Ice Hockey Tournament. Smith signed as an undrafted agent with the Buffalo Sabres of National Hockey League on March 29, 2017.
Smith began the following season with the Rochester Americans after being cut from the Sabres training camp. On January 8, 2019, Smith scored his first NHL goal in the second period against the New Jersey Devils.

Smith was a college hockey player for UMass Lowell of Hockey East, where he also majored in chemistry. Smith was named to UMass’ All Hockey East Rookie Team in his first season. He led the team with 16 goals and 19 assists, for a total score of 35 points. Smith also became the first River Hawk rookie to score 30 points per season since Scott Wilson in 2011. Smith and Zack Kamrass received the UMass Lowell Hockey Most Valuable Player Award on April 21. Smith was also named River Hawks Rookie-of-the Year.
Smith, in his second year of college, was named to Hockey East’s All- Tournament Team. He also won the River Hawks’ leading scorer award. Smith scored his first hat trick of the season in an 8-1 victory over Arizona State on January 30, 2016. Smith was a part of the 2016 Hockey East Men’s Ice Hockey Tournament. He helped Massachusetts-Lowell defeat Boston University in the Quarterfinals. This allowed him to progress to the Semifinals, and then the Championship. UMass lost 3-2 to Northeastern in the Championship match.
Smith played the 2017–18 season with the Sabres American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Rochester Americans. In his rookie season with the Americans, Smith was named to the 2018 AHL All-Star Classic on January 4, 2018. On July 16, 2018, Smith signed a one-year, two way contract with the Sabres worth $874,125.
