In September 2009 McLean got invited to attend the Tampa Bay Lightning training camp for the 2009-10 season. McLean was one of the final cut list prior to the start of the season and was later released. On the 10th of October 09, 2009 McLean was signed to a single-year deal to SC Bern, in Swiss National League which is where McLean spent the following two years. A.

On June 3, 2015, McLean left the NLA after six seasons and signed a one-year contract with Austrian club, EHC Black Wings Linz of the EBEL. After two productive seasons with Linz, at after completing his 18th full professional season in 2016–17, McLean opted to end his professional career and return home to Canada on March 22, 2017.

On July 1st, 2007 McLean signed a contract for three years to the Florida Panthers. In his debut campaign as a member of the Panthers in 2007-08, McLean finished 5th on the team with 37 points in 67 games. McLean was unable to replicate the same performance in the 2008-09 campaign since his total points dropped to 19. In the wake of the Panthers inability to make the postseason, McLean had to be released from the last year of his contract on June 29, 2009.

Brett McLean was selected with the sixth selection, 242nd overall during the 1997 NHL Entry Draft by the Dallas Stars. Despite an impressive junior season for the Kelowna Rockets of the Western Hockey League, McLean was not able to secure an extension from the Stars. He was not signed, McLean worked in minor leagues for affiliated teams from the Calgary Flames and the Minnesota Wild before signing with the Chicago Blackhawks and making his NHL debut during the season 2002/03.

The 2003-04 campaign, McLean played his first full season in the NHL scoring 11 goals for the rebuilding Blackhawks. Brett got his first NHL goals in the third game of professional play on the 16th of October on the 16th of October, 2003 in a game against Marc Denis and the Columbus Blue Jackets in an 2 – 1 Blackhawks defeat. Brett signed as an unrestricted free agent to the Colorado Avalanche on July 21 in 2004. In the 2004-05 season, he was a part of with the Malmo Redhawks of the Swedish Elitserien during the NHL lockout. Brett had a career-high 40 points in the 2005-06 season with the Avalanche and followed that up the subsequent season by scoring 15 goals of even strength during the 2006-07 season.

On July 1, 2011, after two years spent in Europe, McLean signed a two-way contract with the Chicago Blackhawks. Unable to stick with the Blackhawks out of training camp, McLean was assigned to affiliate, the Rockford IceHogs of the AHL. Upon reaching the midpoint of the 2011–12 season without a recall, McLean sought a release and returned to the Swiss NLA, signing and later extending for a further season with HC Lugano on March 15, 2012.
