After being selected to tour with the British and Irish Lions 2001 to Australia, he was injured and had to withdraw. He also missed the 2003 Six Nations Championship due to injury.

In 2007, McBryde took over the role of Grand Sword Bearer at the National Eisteddfod of Wales from Ray Gravell.

He speaks fluent Welsh. McBryde played his first club rugby match for Bangor RFC, Porthaethwy, and the North Wales team. In search of higher standards of rugby, he moved to South Wales. After joining Swansea, he moved to Llanelli and made his debut for the club against Cardiff on October 1, 1994. Llanelli won the Welsh Cup 1998 and 1999, and he captained them. He also played for the Llanelli Scarlets region side in 2003. Between 1994 and 2005, he played 250 games for Llanelli as well as the Scarlets.

McBryde was an overhead lineman before becoming a professional football player. He won the 1992 “Wales’ strongest men” competition. After the 2019 Rugby World Cup, Robin was appointed Assistant Coach at Leinster rugby.

In 1994, he won his first cap for Wales against Fiji. He was replaced in the match against Ireland, March 2005. This match saw Wales win the Grand Slam.

In August 2005 he announced his retirement from rugby following surgery to remove a disc from the top of his spine.
