Montour was chosen for the Anaheim Ducks in the second round, which was the 55th overall, from the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.

Montour continued to play for the Ducks throughout the 2017-18 season. He recorded a career-high 32 points in over 80 games. The end of the season, and with Montour as an unrestricted free-agent, the Ducks signed him to a contract for two years.

Montour began the 2018–19 season returning for his third season with the Ducks. Montour led Anaheim defensemen with 25 points through 62 games, however with the Ducks out of a playoff spot approaching the trade deadline, Montour was dealt to the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for Brendan Guhle and a 2019 first-round pick on February 24, 2019.

Montour was a part of the opening half of the 2016-17 season playing ice hockey playing with San Diego before he was selected to Anaheim on the 28th of December 2016. The player earned his NHL debut on the 29th of December with the Calgary Flames. Montour made his debut NHL goal in his sixth game against the Tampa Bay Lightning on February 6 the 6th of February, 2017. Montour finished the season with four assists and two goals in 27 games. He after which he provided 7 more assists in the 17 subsequent game of Stanley Cup playoffs.

Montour began his journey in hockey as a minor player at Cambridge, Ontario, prior to joining the Brantford Golden Eagles hockey club in the 2010-11 season. Montour later joined with the Caledonia Corvairs for one season in 2012-13.

Montour was a player with his team, the Waterloo Black Hawks of the United States Hockey League (USHL) and one year with the University of Massachusetts Amherst, which was where he became the most prestigious NHL draft selection in the school’s history. Montour started his professional career at the age of 21 playing for his Anaheim Ducks’ affiliate, the Norfolk Admirals of the American Hockey League (AHL) toward the close in the season 2014-15. Montour would participate for the entirety of the 2015-16 season for the Ducks who relocated to their AHL affiliate that was named the San Diego Gulls. Montour was chosen for play in the 2017 AHL All-Star game for the second consecutive season. Even though he didn’t play the whole season with the Gulls Montour was able to score 21 points in just 25 games.

On April 29, 2019, Montour was selected to make his international debut after he was named to the Team Canada roster for the 2019 IIHF World Championship, held in Slovakia. On May 13, 2019, during a 6-5 victory over host nation Slovakia, Montour suffered a tournament ending lower body injury, he finished scoreless through 3 games for Canada. He later received the Silver medal as Canada progressed through to the playoff rounds before losing the final to Finland to finish with the Silver Medal on May 26, 2019.
