Carter attended Texas Tech University, where he played for the Texas Tech Red Raiders football team from 2006 to 2009. In the 2008 regular season, he allowed only one sack. In 2009, Carter was listed at No. 15 on Rivals.com′s preseason offensive tackle power ranking. He was also named to the 2009 Outland Trophy watch list. On September 27, 2009, Carter was suspended indefinitely for violating team rules. He was reinstated on October 4, after missing only a single game.

Carter was signed to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers practice squad on September 14,

2010. He was waived/injured on August 29, 2011.
