Brad Lackey (born July 8 1953) is an American professional racer in the motocross category. He raced at the AMA Motocross Championships from 1970 until 1972, and during the Motocross World Championships from 1973 through 1982. Lackey was noted for being the first and the only American to take home the 500cc world motocross title in the year 1982. The nickname was “Bad Brad”, Lackey was admitted into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 1999. Then, in 2013, He was inducted into Motorsports Hall of Fame of America.

The 3rd of July, 1977 Lackey made history as the only American racer to take home the overall win in the 500cc world championship motocross Grand Prix when he won the British Grand Prix.

Lackey was inducted into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 1999 and, in 2013 he was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America. Today, Lackey continues his involvement in the sport of motocross taking part in vintage motocross racing.

Lackey was born in Berkeley, California, Lackey was the son of a fervent motorcyclist. He was raised riding off-road motorcycles through the mountains of in the San Francisco Bay area. He started racing motocross at 13 years old and was progressing to becoming an expertly-ranked rider in the early 1970s. He was able to compete in the 1970s when he got an offer of sponsorship from the regional CZ dealer. In the year 1970 the race motocross was starting to gain popularization in America. United States and, American racing motocrossers were not as well-trained as racers from Europe which is where the sport been born. Through watching European racing motocross, Lackey learned about the importance of physical fitness in a successful racer.

Then he returned to the United States and competed in the 1971 AMA 500cc national championship in motocross which he won by finishing second only one point behind the champion Mark Blackwell. Lackey started his 1972 AMA Motocross National Championship season with a win in the first seven races on the CZ At this point, the Kawasaki factory gave Lackey an opportunity to compete for Kawasaki. He took his fifth win of the season with the Kawasaki and then won victory in the AMA 500cc AMA Motocross National Championship in dominant manner. Pomeroy also finished as the top-ranked American driver during the 2002 Trans-AMA Motocross series. In the final stages of his 1972 campaign, Pomeroy along with Jim Pomeroy, Jimmy Weinert and Gary Jones were selected by the AMA to be the first team from America. United States at the Motocross des Nations in which the team scored seventh place.

Over the years, he rode for several different factories including, Kawasaki, Husqvarna, Honda and Suzuki, finishing as high as second in the world in 1978 and 1980. He often encountered bad luck with bike failures at inopportune times, prompting the European motorcycling press to dub him “Bad Luckey”. In the 1980 season, Lackey went into the final race of the season trailing the championship points leader, André Malherbe by a single point however, he crashed in the final race to eliminate his hopes for a world championship. Despite the setbacks, Lackey persevered and in 1982, after a ten-year effort, he was able to clinch his first and only 500cc Motocross World Championship aboard a Suzuki. After his triumph, Suzuki scaled back their racing efforts and Lackey was left without a sponsor. He decided to retire on top, as world champion.
