Boyd Jay Petersen (born February 23rd 1962) is the program coordinator in the field of Mormon Studies in Utah Valley University (UVU) and also teaches English and literary studies at UVU as well as Brigham Young University (BYU). He was also biographer of Hugh Nibley, a candidate for the Utah House of Representatives, and the president of the Association for Mormon Letters. He was appointed as editor in Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought for the period 2016-2020.

Petersen is an instructor in the Honors Program at BYU as well as in his work in the English and Humanities departments of Utah Valley University, where the professor was awarded an Excellence in Teaching Award in 2006. Due to his close relationship with Hugh Nibley, Petersen authored the biography in 2002 Hugh Nibley: A Consecrated Life. Petersen has also written articles in various journals that include BYU Studies, Sunstone, Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought as well as The Journal of Mormon History.

Petersen is the program coordinator for Mormon Studies at Utah Valley University. He has also been on the board of directors for the Association for Mormon Letters (AML), Mormon Scholars in the Humanities, and Segullah, a Mormon-themed literary journal. He served as AML’s president from 2009-2010. He is book review editor for the Journal of Mormon History, and was named editor for Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought for the 2016-2020 term.

In 2012, Petersen ran again against Lockhart, who had since become the Speaker of the House. On November 6, Petersen lost with 24 percent to Lockhart’s 76 percent.

Following having completed his assignment, Petersen was enrolled at Brigham Young University (BYU) where he earned the bachelor’s degree from the department of French as well as international relations, in the year 1988. The year 1995 was the time he earned an M.A. in comparative literature at the University of Maryland at College Park. He graduated in 2007 from the University of Maryland at College Park. finished the Ph.D. in literary studies from The University of Utah’s Department of Languages and Literature.
