Betts is a native of Edmonton, Alberta, but was raised within Sherwood Park, Alberta.
TSN hockey expert Pierre McGuire declared Betts “the most underrated player in the league”. The praise continued for Betts on the 24th of January 2009 the day Larry Brooks, columnist for The New York Post, declared that Betts along with his teammate Fredrik Sjostrom may be the top penalty kill duo ever in Rangers history. In the year 2009 the penalty kill had reached an all-time high for the franchise of 87.6 percent.
Following his release from the team, Betts was invited to the 2009 Philadelphia Flyers training camp. The Flyers signed the player to a one-year contract on the 1st of October September, 2009. The Flyers then agreed to sign Betts for a 2-year extension on February 12, 2010. On October 5, 2011 the Montreal Canadiens picked Betts up on waivers issued by the Flyers. On October 9 11, 2011 they Montreal Canadiens cancelled the waiver claim of Betts and sent him back with the Philadelphia Flyers, as he was unable to pass his physical. Betts was absent for all of the 2011-12 campaign, and then resigned after the season.
