William Lange (born (1972-02-11 ) February 11 in 1972) is an American college basketball coach. He is currently the head coach for men for Saint Joseph’s University. He was previously the assistant head coach for the Philadelphia 76ers. Before joining the 76ers as head coach, he served as the head coach’s assistant for Villanova University and head coach of the Navy Midshipmen.

Lange gained his very first Division I head coaching assignment in 2004, as he was the head coach at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Lange was given a team who was just 5-23 the year before. The team showed improvement both on and off the court with an overall record of 16-14 in 2007-08, the first winning streak in seven years. They also posted the team’s record was 19-11 in the 2008-09.

Lange left his position with the 76ers to be the men’s basketball head coach at Saint Joseph’s University on March 28, 2019. He was hired to replace Phil Martelli after 24 years at head coach of Saint Joseph’s.

Lange came back to Division I ball when he took on an assistant coaching role in Villanova University. From 2001 to 2004 Billy was with Jay Wright, while the Villanova Wildcasts achieved great success.

in 1996 Lange started his coaching journey as an assistant to Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame coach Herb Magee at Philadelphia University. After two seasons under Magee, Lange moved on to Division I basketball, playing crosstown before landing an assistant coach position in 1998 at La Salle University in 1998. When at La Salle, Lange helped the Explorers achieve a record of 13-15 in the 1998-99 season prior to being offered the position of head coach in the United States Merchant Marine Academy located in Kings Point, New York.

Lange’s initial two years as head coach at a college were very successful. In his first year, Lange guided his Mariners to the 1999 and 2000 Skyline Conference regular season title and fell a half-game less than qualifying for the Division III NCAA Tournament, losing the Skyline Conference tournament. The team nevertheless posted an overall record of 17-11, with a 13-3 record in conference. Lange’s third year at USMMA however, was to be a landmark with his team posting 22-8 overall, with 15-1 in conference. The 2000-01 Mariners took home every single regular-season as well as conference tournament championships. They also went on into the Division III Sweet 16, the first time that a USMMA team ever advanced to the second round.

Lange left his post at Navy to rejoin Wright as his associate head coach on May 9, 2011. After two seasons at Villanova, Lange was hired by the Philadelphia 76ers as a player development coach for the 2013-14 season. Prior to joining Brett Brown’s staff, Lang reportedly turned down a head coaching opportunity with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, the NBA Development League, or D-League, affiliate of the Houston Rockets.
