Fitzpatrick was born in Johnstown, County Kilkenny in 1954. From a young age, he demonstrated great ability in the sport of throwing. He was educated locally , and later went to St. Kieran’s College in Kilkenny city an intermediate school that was a well-known nursery for young hurlers. Here, his hurling abilities were further refined. Fitzpatrick first experienced success when he took home an All-Ireland Colleges title along with Kieran’s team in the year 1971. The captain was named to the team in the following year, when the team was defeated by Farranferris from Cork.

Fitzpatrick was a senior player in the National Hurling League game against Cork in 1973. In 1974, he was a regular player in the half-forward line and earned the first Leinster medal at the senior level. The medal was later changed to his very first senior All-Ireland medal following his win against Limerick. In 1975, Fitzpatrick was just 21 , was made the captain of Kilkenny’s senior team. He was awarded the second Leinster title, before leading Kilkenny in victory against Galway in the initial seventy-minute All- Ireland final. The next two seasons Wexford defeated Kilkenny as provincial champions but Fitzpatrick took home his very first National Hurling League title in 1976. “The Cats” were back in 1978, with Fitzpatrick getting his second Leinster title. Kilkenny were then eliminated by Cork at Cork’s All- Ireland final.

Fitzpatrick continued playing with Kilkenny until 1986 when he retired following a National League game against Galway.

Fitzpatrick was a hurler from his club with the Fenians team in Johnstown. He enjoyed a lot of success as a player at the underage level before entering the senior squad in the beginning of the 1970s. He won the title four times. Kilkenny SHC titles with the club in 1972 1973, 1974, and 1977. Fitzpatrick also took home the Leinster club hurling championship the year 1974. He fell to St. Finbarr’s of Cork in the All-Ireland final.

Billy Fitzpatrick (born 6 April 1954 in Johnstown, County Kilkenny, Ireland) is an Irish former athlete. He played hurling at his club in the local area, the Fenians while also being a part of the Kilkenny senior inter-county team from 1974 to 1986. Fitzpatrick was the captain of Kilkenny towards winning the All-Ireland championship in 1975.

In the beginning of the 1970s, Fitzpatrick was at the notice of the Kilkenny inter-county selection committee and was soon a part of in the team of minors. In 1972, he was awarded the first All-Ireland medal when the Kilkenny minors defeated those of the Cork minors to win the championship. Fitzpatrick quickly joined the Kilkenny under-21 squad where the team won back-to back All-Ireland medals in 1974 and 1975. This was Kilkenny’s first title at the level of under-21.

In 1979 Fitzpatrick won his fourth provincial medal before later claiming his third All-Ireland title following another win over Galway. For the next two years Offaly emerged as Leinster champions, however, Fitzpatrick won his second National Hurling League title in 1982, before winning his fifth provincial title. In the subsequent All-Ireland final Kilkenny demolished Cork with Fitzpatrick winning his fourth All-Ireland medal as well as being honoured with his first All-Star award. In 1983 captured a unique double by claiming back-to-back League, Leinster and All-Ireland honours. In the All- Ireland final against Cork Fitzpatrick gave one of the best performances of his life when he scored ten points. Once again he was honoured with another All-Star award.
