William James Riley (born September 20th 1950) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player who was also the first player of color for the National Hockey League (NHL).

Riley was a player-coach and captain and player-coach of the St. John’s Capitals of the Newfoundland Senior Hockey League for three seasons from the 1980s.

After retiring from professional play, Riley returned to coaching in 1989-90, when he landed a head coaching position with the Amherst Ramblers of the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League. Later, he was the head coach, general manager and director of player personnel of the Miramichi Timberwolves of the Maritime Junior A Hockey League. He also served as head coach of the Moncton Wildcats during the 1996–97 season, finishing with a 16–52–2 record.

As coach, he won the Callaghan Cup (forerunner to the Kent Cup) in 1990, and advanced to the Centennial Cup (now known as the Royal Bank Cup).

Riley was selected from The Winnipeg Jets in the 1979 NHL Expansion Draft, but only played 14 games before Riley was sent to the minors, where he was a part of in The New Brunswick Hawks, Moncton Alpines and the Nova Scotia Voyageurs, until his retirement following the 1983-84 season.

In 1973, while working in the factory and playing hockey for the Kitimat Eagles senior team in the Pacific Northwest Hockey League in British Columbia, Riley was found after he scored the score of 206 points in just 80 games over two seasons. A future NHL head coach Tom McVie was in the process of bolstering his team to play for the Dayton Gems of the International Hockey League (IHL). He came across Riley from Kitimat in the city of Kitimat and invited Riley to an attempt. Riley agreed and joined the team in 1974.

Riley was offered a trial for his team the Washington Capitals during their inaugural season of 1974-75. He was able to play in one game, however the majority of his time playing in the minors, most notably in the Dayton Gems. In this period that he met up with and was under the former Capitals coach McVie. He would later be released by the Capitals in the season 1976-1977 NHL season. He would also play for the Capitals during the following three seasons.

As a player, he won a Calder Cup in 1982 with the New Brunswick Hawks.
