She was raised as the being the second youngest daughter of the family, living in the Costello Housing Scheme in the neighborhood known by the name of “La Penitence”. She was a teenager and loved playing cricket with other neighbors and making models of aircraft. Drake also shared a passion for flying along with her dad who always wanted to be pilot. Drake was a student at St. Pius Primary School prior to graduation from St. Rose’s School of High in 1974. She then continued her education, enrolment in a program for an undergraduate degree in chemistry and biology from the University of Guyana in 1975. In the span of two years, she continued her research before receiving an award to pursue a degree in flying in Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Within a week of beginning her studies, Drake’s mother passed away unexpectedly. Although it was a very difficult period, she chose to continue her studies and resumed her studies following the funeral. After having completed the required coursework to learn about crew management and instrumentation and pilot licenses, Drake completed her flight instruction at the airfield located in Wallerfield, Trinidad. She obtained her commercial pilot’s license through Guyana in 1977.
When she joined the NTSB in 1991 Drake became an investigative officer, and was transferred into Washington, D. C. In her first year with at the NTSB, Drake was surprised by the gender-based discrimination she encountered and felt she was required to perform “ten times better” than other males in the field. In 1994, she divorced and then returned to college to complete the course offered by the National Safety Board’s Accident Investigation School in addition to later an aviation and helicopter accidents in the USC. Institute of Safety and Systems Management. Drake obtained a bachelor’s diploma in aeronautics at the age of 2002. She following that, in 2005, she completed the master’s program from the Institute of Safety and Systems Management in Aeronautical Science, both with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Drake later became the first female black senior accident investigator at the NTSB and, as of 2013, was the only female to have been employed in this position.
Drake serves as the manager of the NTSB’s Federal Women’s Program. As part of her duties in administration, Drake consults with aviation officials in various countries in an effort to improve their safety records. She has investigated over 300 crashes and shares her expertise as a means of helping reduce mechanical and environmental factors involved in aircraft accidents. In 2013, she was promoted to also serve as the Program Manager of the Office of the NTSB’s Industry and Government Affairs division, which oversees forums and symposiums on air safety. She has presented safety seminars throughout the United States, including for such organisations as the Experimental Aircraft Association and The National Air and Space Museum.
The position at Goldman Sachs as an analyst became a permanent position but Drake acknowledged after the 1987 financial crisis that the company was in a state of instability. Being a mother of two she relied on her neighbours, babysitters and family members to assist with her children while she worked at night. She also maintained her connections through those of Black Pilots of New York and, when another crash on the markets took place during 1989 Drake started to think about getting back into aviation. One of the other Pilots’ club suggested she to apply for a job in the junior investigation department for the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).
