At the time Concorde was pulled from service in the month of October 2003 Harmer had been in service for over 10 years in the role of a pilot operating regular scheduled flights. In 2001 Harmer, one Air France pilot, Beatrice Vialle became the second of just two women flying Concorde regularly, taking about 35 flights from Paris to New York before the service was discontinued. Following the demise of Concorde Harmer’s departure, Harmer changed into the Boeing 777 until taking voluntary redundancy in the year 2009.
On the 25th of March 1993, Harmer was the first female Concorde pilot, and in the following year, she made the first Concorde flight as the First Officer at NYC’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK). Jacqueline Auriol was the first woman to pilot Concorde as an instructor pilot.

Harmer’s first encounter with the aviation industry came five years later , when she quit hairdressing in order and became an air traffic control officer at London Gatwick Airport. After taking on the role as an air traffic controller, Harmer decided to take her A Levels with the aim of pursuing an law degree. She completed A-levels that covered Geography, English Law, Constitutional Law and Politics. She also started flying lessons, earned the Private Pilot Licence (PPL) and was a pilot instructor at the Goodwood Flying School. Harmer was a student for two years to obtain an Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) that she was granted on May 22, 1982. She submitted over 100 applications prior to securing an appointment as a pilot for Genair, a tiny commuter airline with its headquarters in Humberside Airport.
In March 1984 Harmer joined British Caledonian and flew BAC One-Elevens for three months. She was then able to fly the long-haul McDonnell Douglas DC-10. The year 1987 saw British Caledonian merged with British Airways, the airline operating Concorde in the UK. At the time, British Airways employed over 3000 pilots, however only 60 were women , and no woman was ever been a pilot on Concorde. Harmer was selected to go through the rigorous six-month training course for Concorde in 1992.
Harmer’s interests were not all in the air as she was a qualified commercial yachtmaster, often taking part in international events commanding fellow Concorde crew members and winning several races. She also created a Mediterranean-styled garden at her home in Felpham, West Sussex overlooking the English Channel. Harmer intended to take part in a transatlantic event in 2013 in her yacht Archambault 35 but succumbed to cancer. She died at St. Wilfrid’s Hospice, Chichester, aged 57.
