As the 2006 Winter Olympics being held in Turin Fusar-Poli/Margaglio opted to compete again in their country of origin. They didn’t participate in any international competitions before the Olympics however they did take home their first competition at the Italian National Championships. They won the Olympics are their debut international competition with the scoring system that was adopted by the ISU However, Fusar-Poli/Margaglio still held a slim advantage following the mandatory dance portion of the competition in front of the two-time World champions Tatiana Navka / Roman Kostomarov. The outcome was described in certain news reports in the period in the media as “shocking”. In the dance that was originally performed the pair of Fusar-Poli and Margaglio were doing an incline lift with just two seconds remaining in their program at the time that Margaglio was unable to keep his balance. He dropped Fusar Poli and fell to the ice. At the end of the dance, Fusar-Poli remained staring at Margaglio for about 30 seconds before they were able to bow and leave the skating rink. They fell down to 7th overall. However, they they moved to sixth following a flawless free dance. They said to reporters that their incident that occurred at the conclusion of the first dance caused them to feel angry at their mistake , rather than towards one another. In the years following, FusarPoli claimed the ice had Swarovski crystals in the ice that were from the costumes worn by earlier participants, but the drop was the result of their own error rather than the conditions on the ice. The Olympics were Fusar- Poli/Margaglio’s final competitive event together, but they continued to perform in shows.
The next season was extremely successful for the pair winning every competition they participated in, as the only Italians to take home the World award in any sport. The duo did not have the same success in 2001-2002, finishing second place in the Europeans and finishing third in the 2002 Winter Olympics. Their silver medal at the Olympics did not come without controversy after Margaglio was injured during the free dancing part. The outcome was criticized by the Lithuanian team, which had placed fifth, but the protest was rejected. Fusar-Poli/Margaglio was not a part of the 2002 World Championships and would not resume skating in the eligible category until the 2005-06 season.
