Sinodinos was born in Newcastle, New South Wales and was the son of Greek immigrants as parents. His father was an activist in the left- leaning Seaman’s Union that, during Sinodinos in his initial years of struggle, was fighting in opposition to an United States intervention in Vietnam. His mother told stories about his childhood during the Greek Civil War of the 1940s, when Communist rebels would knock on the door of their home in the evening. Sinodinos has claimed that this experience helped him develop his first political opinions.
Sinodinos was born in Newcastle, New South Wales and went to his studies at the University of Newcastle. Then, he became an officer in the public service and a advisor to the political establishment, with the most notable being as the Chief of Staff of the Prime Minister John Howard between 1997 and 2006. After getting appointed for a vacancy within the Senate in the year 2011, Sinodinos spent periods working for Goldman Sachs and the National Australia Bank. Sinodinos was named Assistant Treasurer under the Abbott Government in 2013, however, he resigned from his duties as Minister in March 2014 in the course of an investigation conducted by the New South Wales Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC); He continued to hold the post until December 2014. In September of 2015, Sinodinos returned to the minister as Cabinet Secretary under the Turnbull government. He was appointed Minister of Industry, Innovation and Science in January 2017. He was absent from the Parliament in October 2017 due to his health issues and resigned from the ministry in December. In May of this year it was announced that his replacement Joe Hockey as Ambassador to the United States.
Sinodinos became a director of Australian Water Holdings Pty Ltd (AWH) in 2008 and chairman in 2010. He resigned from these positions on becoming a senator.
Sinodinos left his position as the Prime Minister’s Chief of Staff to become a director with the investment bank Goldman Sachs JBWere, and a regional general manager at the National Australia Bank; he reportedly declined an offer to become Australian Ambassador to the United States. In 2008, he was part of a panel that mediated public input into the Defence White Paper. In March 2009, he was appointed a managing director at the National Australia Bank.
He was Chief of Staff for the then the Prime Premier John Howard from 1997 to the year 2006 after having served alongside him between 1987 and 1989, when he was the Opposition Leader, before rejoining him in 1995. He was Senator from New South Wales from 2011 until 2019, and was a member of his Liberal Party, and was Minister in his time in the Abbott and Turnbull governments.
Sinodinos completed his studies at his studies at the University of Newcastle in 1979 with the degree of Master of Commerce with Honors. He was then enrolled in into the Australian Public Service as a graduate recruit. He was employed by the Department of Finance, before being employed in the Department of the Treasury between 1980 and 1987 , and then in 1989 until 1995.
Sinodinos was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2008 for service to politics through the executive function of government, to the development of economic policy and reform, and to the Greek community.
