In the 44th Parliament, Back was chairman of the Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Legislative Committee. Before that he was chairman of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations References Committee, and actively contributed to the Rural Affairs and Transport committee, where his main focus centred around biosecurity, food and animal health, and the welfare of agricultural industries generally. He was a member of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on Gambling Reform and involved in multiple hearings, including: animal welfare standards in Australia’s live export markets; reform of the Australian Federation; and review of the Professional Services Review (PSR) Scheme. He was Deputy Whip in the Senate in 2012.
The year 2009 was the time that Back had been appointed at a joint session in the Western Australian Parliament to replace Chris Ellison, who had quit in January. The year was 1971. He received his degree in 1971 from University of Queensland and was later posted to Merredin as an Veterinary Officer in the year 1972. The post remained in place until he was transferred to Moora in 1974. Then, in the middle the time, Back resigned and went to racehorse training at Caulfield, Victoria.
Back was a lecturer on Animal Science and Production at Curtin University (Muresk Institute) from 1975 until 1988. Through this time In addition, he was working at Muresk Institute at the University of California in 1980 and 1984. He was employed as a researcher in the Department of Equine Reproduction. In Muresk, Back developed Australia’s first tertiary education course on Equine management in the year 1977. Students were in a position to secure a variety of jobs around the world because of this. Following a shift in career direction, he then appointed his first Chief Executive Officer of the Rottnest Island Authority. He was in office for seven years during the late 1990s. Back was also the director for the WA Bush Fires Board. In this position, Back introduced water bombing aircrafts and upgraded equipment for volunteers. He was awarded the prime minister’s Gold Award for technological achievement which recognizes the work he has done using satellites in tracking wildfires in remote areas. After that, he relocated to Tasmania and bought the retail and wholesale operations from Shell Company. Shell Company, which was his first introduction to Oil and Gas industry. In the following years, he continued his work across Australia, South East Asia, India and the Middle East providing oil majors with oil and military customers, later helping in the creation of a multinational oil and gas service company up to the year 2008.
On 13 June 2017, Back announced his intention to resign from the Senate, with the following sitting week to be his last. In July, the WA Liberal Party preselected Slade Brockman to be appointed in Back’s place.
