Anne Abernathy is one of the most popular and richest Luger who was born on April 12, 1953 in Saint Thomas, United States Virgin Islands. Anne Abernathy (born April 12 1953) is a luge player of the United States Virgin Islands and is the oldest female athlete for the Winter Olympics. Her participation in the 2006 Winter Olympics were her sixth. In spite of her age she’s an extremely competitive athlete with numerous podium places at international events and is regularly placed among the top 20 in worldwide rankings. Her name is known in the luge community for her role as “Grandma Luge.” She is currently training for the 2020 Summer Olympics with the archer.
Abernathy was the first female to be selected for the six Winter Olympics. At the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City she became the oldest female athlete to ever take part for these Winter Games. She is the longest-running female Olympian at every Olympic Games (Winter or Summer) and also the first female athlete older than 50 to compete at this year’s Winter Olympics.
Her top finishes include third place at the Nations Cup in Igls, Austria in January 2004, and third place at the Nations Cup in Königssee, Germany, February 2004. She finished in the top 10 in seven of the eight events in the 2004-2005 Nations Cup series. Abernathy finished 25th in the 37th World Championships in 2004 in Nagano, Japan, but did not compete in the 2005 championships in Park City, Utah due to injuries suffered during homologation at the Cesana Pariol track in Cesana, Italy three weeks earlier.
During practice for the competition at the 2006 Winter Olympics, Abernathy crashed and broke her wrist and her scapula, and was forced to withdraw from competition.
Abernathy had a major accident during an World Cup race in Altenberg, Germany in January 2001 that caused a devastating brain injury. To heal her from injury employed an alternative treatment that involved controlling rockets in a videogame using electrical impulses generated from brain waves. It was a treatment that was designed to aid in retraining your brain’s system to heal damaged regions. The treatment was successful and she was able to be back in competition by enough time to qualify for at the Winter Olympics. The account of Abernathy’s crash and recovery was presented as part of the Discovery Health Channel series Impact: Stories of Survival.
