Amina Mama is one of the most popular and richest Academic who was born on September 19, 1958 in Kaduna, Kaduna State, Nigeria. Mama was born in the northern part of Nigeria in the year 1958. The year 2008 was the time that Mama took up a job as a professor at Mills College in Oakland, California, United States. Following her move, she said: “I have learned America isn’t just a big, bad source of imperialism.” Professor Mama has been named the Barbara Lee Distinguished Chair in Mills’ Women’s Leadership. She was the first woman to be appointed to this post. She taught a class titled “Real Policy, Real Politics” along with Congresswoman Lee on issues affecting African as well as African American women. These included gender roles as well as HIV/AIDS, poverty and militarism. She also served as Chair of the Department of Gender and Women Studies at the University of California, Davis.
Mama describes herself as a feminist and not a womanist, arguing that feminism originates in Africa and that white feminism “has never been strong enough to be ‘enemy’—in the way that say, global capitalism can be viewed as an enemy”. She has criticised discourses of women in development for stripping gender studies of politically meaningful feminism. She has also argued that African universities continue to show entrenched patriarchy, in terms of both interpersonal sexism and institutional gender gaps.
Mama relocated from Nigeria into the UK and continued her education through her home institution, the University of St. Andrews, Scotland (1980, Bachelor of Science with Honours in Psychology) and studying at the London School of Economics and Political Science, University of London (1981 Masters in Science in Sociological Psychology) as well as at Birkbeck college, University of London, where she was awarded the doctorate degree in organization psychology. She wrote her thesis titled “Race and Subjectivity: A Study of Black Women”. One of her first projects involves comparing the experiences that women in British women and Nigerian women. She was transferred to the Netherlands before returning to Nigeria and was confronted with another wave of turmoil in the year 2000. After that, she relocated into South Africa, where she began her work for the historically black University of Cape Town (UCT). In UCT she was appointed head of the African Gender Institute (AGI) and also helped in the establishment of the magazine Feminist Africa. Mama continues to be as the Editor of Feminist Africa.
