The Chicago Bears selected Spellman in the 22nd round of the 1992 NFL Draft. Spellman entered the league as a rookie at 20 years old. Spellman was the right defensive end backup to future Hall of Famer Richard Dent. He made 30 tackles and 4 sacks (4th on the team), as well as one pass defensed. He had 28 tackles and 2.5 sacks in 1993.
