Mungiu-Pippidi taught at the National School of Administration and Political Science of Bucharest. She also taught courses on nationalalism and electoral behavior. She has also taught at several universities and business schools on post-Cold War transitions to a market economy, including Harvard, Stanford and Princeton. She is the sister to Cristian Mungiu, a film director. She was appointed professor in democracy studies at Berlin’s Hertie School of Governance, Germany in August 2007. She co-directs the EU FP7 five-year research project ANTICORRP.
She founded the largest think tank in Romania, the Romanian Academic Society, in 1995. They published several reports that were the focus of public debates. Mungiu-Pippidi currently serves as the president of SAR. In 2004, she created and led the “Coalition for a Clean Parliament” (“Coalitia pentru un Parlament Curat). This coalition, which was formed in response to the 2004 legislative election, sought to exclude candidates with moral problems (such incompatibility or undergoing investigation by judicial authorities) from party lists. 98 candidatures were withdrawn after the campaign.

Alina Mungiu–Pippidi also wrote a variety of plays. The most well-known of these was The Evangelists. Although the play was originally written in 1990s, it only made its debut in Romania in 2005. There it faced a lot of criticism from Christian religious groups who called it “blasphemy”, and an attack on public morals. The play, which is based on Jesus’ life from a different perspective than the New Testament, depicts his story. One of its controversial scenes suggests that Mary Magdalene had oral sex while with Jesus.
She was born in Iasi and graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Iasi. In her student years, she started contributing essays to the literary criticism magazine Cronica. She worked until 1994 for the Bucharest Daily Express after 1993. She was also the Romanian correspondent to the French newspaper Le Monde (1992-1993) and was employed by the Romanian Television Company (1997-1998) as a news editor. She authored a textbook in political science for high school students.
