Calatayud was a student at Havana’s Manuel Permuy Sports School. She started to take up athletics as a way to manage her asthma. Calatayud made her debut in 1998 when she reached the semi-finals for the 400m at Annecy’s 1998 World Junior Championships. She ran 2:00.67 in 1999 to place second at the Pan American Games, Winnipeg, Canada. She placed sixth in the 800m at Sydney’s Olympic Games. Calatayud was also proud of 2000, when she broke the 2-minute barrier for the first time, running 1:59.63 in Jena.
