The biographical television series Zhou Xuan was based on Zhou Xuan’s real life, which was one of China’s Seven Great Singing Stars of the 1940s.

Zhang was the Prince Gong role in Wang Xuexin’s 1987 film Two Dowagers. He received a nomination for Best Actor at the 10th Hundred Flowers Awards. He received his second Best Actor nomination in the same year for his role as Cheng Huan, Mutiny.

In 1992, he portrayed Emperor Meiji in the historical television series Beiyang Fleet.
