Zander de Bruyn, born 5 July 1975 in Johannesburg, is an ex-South African cricketer. He was a right-handed cricketer and a right arm medium-fast bowler. He was a South African Test player and played domestic cricket with the Highveld Lions. His elegance at the crease was what drew comparisons to Hansie Cronje, a former South African captain. With his medium pace bowling, he was able take pressure off of the front-line bowlers with his ability limit the run rate and take partnership-breaking wickets.

He joined Worcestershire in 2005 as a Kolpak batsman. He failed to impress during this period. His first-class wickets cost almost 100 runs each and only a late season century against Somerset saved his batting average. He was part the Titans team that won the 2005-06 SuperSport Series. He moved to the Warriors in the following season but only made five first-class appearances. He posted a record 7/67 against the Titans in 2007-08. He was a losing finalist at the MTN Domestic Championship in 2006-07 as well as 2007-08.

De Bruyn’s Test debut came against India in November 2004. De Bruyn played in both Tests during the South Africans tour to India. He scored his best Test score of 83 in that Test’s first innings. He played in the first Test of the home series against England and retained his place in the squad. However, Jacques Kallis was brought in to replace him.

De Bruyn started his career with Transvaal Cricket team (later Gauteng cricket club). His career really took off when he joined Easterns. After being out of a contract at Gauteng and not receiving a new one, he started working part- time in a clothing retailer. Coach Ray Jennings offered de Bruyn a spot in the team on a “pay-as you play” basis. After a disappointing first innings, de Bruyn scored 169 runs to help Easterns win the SuperSport Series 2003-04.

His first-class average batting was 29.61 before this, and his batting average since then is more than 40. He became the second South African cricketer, after Barry Richards to score 1000 first-class runs during a season in the SuperSport Series and Currie Cup.

In April 2008 de Bruyn signed for Somerset as a Kolpak player. He remained with them for the 2009 season, leading the team in Twenty20 Cup runs. In June 2009, it was announced that de Bruyn had signed for the Lions. On 3 December 2010, it was announced that de Bruyn had signed a one-year deal at Surrey as a Kolpak player. After this season he could obtain a British passport. de Bruyn was released by Surrey at the end of the 2013 season. In April 2014 he announced his retirement from playing the game.
