Zahra Nemati Biography

Zahra Nemati is one of the most popular and richest Archer who was born on April 30, 1985 in Kerman County, Iran. Nemati was part the Iranian women’s team recurve team along with Razieh Shir Mohammedi and Zahra Jalmard. With 1646 points, they placed second in the ranking round and beat the Czech Republic in quarterfinals. The Iranian team lost to South Korea in the semifinals by 192-186. However, they defeated Italy 188-184 in the bronze medal match. Nemati won her second medal at the Games.

Nemati was chosen to represent Iran at the 2012 Summer Paralympics. She won two medals and became the first Iranian woman ever to win a medal at the Olympic or Paralympic Games. With a score 613, she was first in the ranking round for the women’s W1/W2 event. She then advanced to the round 16 against Mariangela Perna from Italy. She defeated Turkey’s Gizem Girismen by a score 6-0 in the quarterfinals and advanced to the gold-medal match against Veronica Floreno of Italy 6-0. Nemati defeated Elisabetta Mijno from Italy in the final, and won the gold medal with a 7-3 victory. She dedicated her gold medal “all the people who prayed for my success.”

At the 2013 World Para-archery Championships held in Bangkok, Thailand, she won the gold medal in the women’s individual recurve W2 and a bronze medal in the women’s team recurve.

In 2015 Nemati made history by securing qualification for both the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 2016 Summer Paralympics to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She qualified for the Olympics by placing second in the women’s recurve at the 2015 Asian Archery Championships in Bangkok before winning gold at the 2015 Asian Para-archery Championships to qualify for the Paralympics. She is the first archer to qualify for both Games in the same year since Italian Paola Fantato in 1996.

Before her injuries, Nemati was a black belt in Taekwondo. In 2006, she began archery and finished third at the National Championships. She competed against other able-bodied athletes. She competes in para-archery events in the W2 category.
