Mitchell and Luke Kunin, both rookies, scored their first NHL goals in the 2017-18 season’s 6-4 win over the New York Islanders. Mitchell was later reassigned back to Iowa, but Kunin remained. Mitchell was recalled to Iowa on November 21, 2017. Joel Eriksson Ek, Luke Kunin and Luke Kunin were also sent down. The Wild placed Mitchell on waivers on January 1, 2018. He was then assigned to the AHL affiliate of the Iowa Wild on January 2. Mitchell played in 23 games for Minnesota, scoring 3 goals and 5 assists.

Leaving the Kings organization at the conclusion of his contract, Mitchell opted to sign his first contract abroad in agreeing to a one-year deal with Russian club, HC Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk of the KHL on July 1, 2019.

Mitchell was in his final year of his rookie agreement when he received his first recall to Minnesota Wild on November 9, 2016. Mitchell made his debut on the night following, with a win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Nov 10, 2016. Mitchell attended his first Wild training camp and was then assigned to his professional career as an affiliate with the Iowa Wild. Mitchell began the 2014-15 season on September 27, 2014. Mitchell, in his first season with Iowa, was the only player to play in all regular season games. He scored 17 goals and 35 points during 76 contests.

Mitchell was a major junior hockey player in Ontario with the Guelph Storm, Ontario Hockey League. Mitchel, who was not drafted, scored 83 points in his 67 games with the Storm in the 2013-14 season. After finishing his junior season with the Storm, Mitchel was the franchise leader with 322 in games played. As a free agent from the Wild in the off-season, Mitchell joined his second NHL club in agreeing to a one-year, two-way contract with the Los Angeles Kings on July 14, 2018. In the 2018–19 season, Mitchell played exclusively with AHL affiliate, the Ontario Reign, posting 15 goals and 31 points in 61 games.
