Wells announced his retirement as a professional soccer player on February 17, 2009, one month before the 2009 MLS season began.
After graduating from high school, Wells was drafted 21st in the 2004 MLS SuperDraft by MetroStars. While he spent most of the season supporting Jonny Walker, he only played two games during the mid-season. Walker was still recovering from his surgery. Wells assumed the starting position in 2005 and performed well. Walker was traded to Columbus. Wells was once again a backup after Tony Meola returned to the club. He was traded to Houston in exchange for a 4th-round pick in the 2006 MLS SuperDraft. D.C. United acquired him along with a conditional pick for Bobby Boswell, December 12, 2007.
