He made his major league debut on August 2 versus the Houston Astros, allowing one run over two innings pitched.
The Houston Astros drafted Grotz in the 28th round with the 829th overall pick of the 2015 MLB Draft. Grotz split his 2015 season with the Greeneville Astros as well as the Tri-City ValleyCats. Grotz was released April 2, 2016 by the Astros.

Grotz attended Burlingame High School in Burlingame, California. Grotz was a Cal State Monterey Bay student in 2012 and played college baseball for the Otters. Grotz then transferred to the College of San Mateo in 2013 for the season. Grotz transferred to the University of Tennessee, where he played for the Volunteers in 2014. Grotz then transferred to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in 2015 season.
On August 18, 2016, he signed with Los Angeles Dodgers and played for them until September 18, 2016.
On June 15, 2018, Grotz signed a minor league contract with the New York Mets and played the rest of the season with the Columbia Fireflies. Grotz became a free agent following the 2018 season.
