His father was a politician and businessman. He served as governor of Fars Province between 1980 and 1988. He studied civil engineering at Sharif University of Technology.
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad nominated him as the oil minister to replace Masoud Mir Kazemi on 26 July 2011. On 3 August 2011, he was approved by parliament as the fourth Ahmedinejad oil minister. He was elected by 246 Majlis members with 216 votes. He was president of OPEC in 2011. Ghasemi’s term as oil minister ended 15 August 2013. Bijan Namdar Zanganeh was elected to replace him. Ghasemi, shortly after his resignation, was appointed advisor to Defense Ministry Hossein Dehghan (22 August).
From 2007 to 2011, he was the chairman of Khatam-al Anbiya Construction Headquarters, which is affiliated with the IRGC. In August 2011, he retired from the military.

Rostam Ghasemi, Persian: rstm Qsmy, was born on May 5, 1964. He is an Iranian politician and military officer who served as minister of petroleum between 3 August 2011 and 15 August 2013.
Ghasemi joined in 1979 the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in Kharg Island. He was a participant in the Iran-Iraq War. He joined the Khatam-al Anbia forces in Bushehr, which was the Guards’ engineering company and construction firm. He was appointed head of the IRGC’s Nouh navy base in 1996. Ghasemi was appointed deputy commander of troops in 2001.
