She grew up in Ebetsu in Hokkaido. Her grandparents and parents owned a small shop selling kimono. This was the place that inspired her later work as an artist and designer. She began ballet training at the Miharu Ishikawa Ballet School when she was four years old. She was thirteen years old when she was admitted to the San Francisco Ballet School.

Takeshima won the 2005 and 2003 ‘Best Female Dancer Awards’ from Dance Europe Magazine. She also received a gold medal at Kiev’s 1996 Serge Lifar International ballet Competition. Takeshima has performed at many galas, including multiple performances at Taipei’s International Ballet Star Gala. Takeshima quit dancing in April 2014. Dawson’s classic ballet Giselle was her final performance. It was a ballet that Takeshima created and for which she also designed the costumes.

Takeshima was a dancer with the Universal Ballet in Korea, Canada’s Alberta Ballet Company, and the Feld Ballet in America. She moved to Holland in 1993 and joined the Dutch National Ballet. Aaron Watkin (director of the Semperoper Ballett) asked Takeshima in 2006 to become a principal dancer. Takeshima, a long-time dance partner of Watkin, agreed to join the newly revised company.

Her designs have been called “elegant, simple and among the most beautiful dance costumes in the European dance scene.” Takeshima’s first design and collaboration was with Dawson for the Dutch National Ballet in 2000.
