She also defeated eighth-seeded Russian Yaroslava shvedova in Bali, Marina Erakovic from New Zealand in Seoul and fourth-seeded Japanese Ai Sugiyama, Tokyo. Yuan’s greatest win was this win over Sugiyama, who is 37th in the rankings.
In 2005, Yuan continued her steady upward climb through the rankings. She reached the semi-finals of a $50,000 hard court tournament in Bendigo, Australia, in February 2005. She won her first ITF singles title in her career at the $10,000 grass-court tournament in Benalla in March. In the spring, she performed well in several $25,000 tournaments, including a semi-final in Campobasso, Italy, where she defeated Jarmila Gajdosova, a rising Slovak star, before losing to Mariya Korytseva, of Ukraine, in three sets. She then beat Gajdosova again in three, beating Kaia Kanepi, an equally promising youngster from Estonia, and Christina Wheeler in the final at Grado in June. After a three-set win over Tatiana Poutchek in August, she was close to qualifying for the $50,000 Bronx tournament. However, she lost in the final set against German Angelika Bachmann in a very close qualifier round match.
Yuan won her first 2007 main draw match at Indian Wells, where she qualified and beat Frenchwoman Virginie Razzano in 3 sets. She then lost in two tight sets to Japanese veteran Ai Sugiyama. Two weeks later, she won a 25K ITF tournament in Hammond, Louisiana.
In January’s Australian Open women’s singles, Yuan lost 6–3, 6–2 to number 2 seed and eventual champion Serena Williams in the first round.
She reached the final of a $10,000 grass court event at Yarrawonga in Australia in March 2004 but lost to her last opponent. She reached the semi- finals of a $25,000 Wulanhaote event in June, just after her 18th birthday. However, Liu Nannan, her more experienced opponent, defeated her. She reached the final of her first $25,000 tournament at Port Pirie in December. However, she lost a close three-set championship decider against an unknown Australian. She had won 32 matches during the year. This lifted her world ranking to 387 and increased her year-on-year 300 places.

Yuan Meng, born 9 May 1986 (simplified Chinese Yuan Meng; traditional Chinese Yuan Meng; pinyin Yuan Meng) is an ex-professional Chinese tennis player. Yuan won four ITF singles titles, and one ITF doubles championship.
Yuan started competing in the ITF circuit when she was fifteen years old, in May 2001. She lost the first round in qualifying for all four events that she entered in 2002 and was not ranked. She finished 2002 ranked 984th after winning seven matches in qualifying, one in a main-draw, and one in the final round of qualifying. She won 11 matches in qualifying, five in main draws and finished the year at Shenzhen’s final qualifying round for the $50,000 event. She was ranked 689th in the world.
2006 began well with the much-improved Chinese rising star qualifying for Gold Coast with wins over Cara Black, Kaia Kanepi (again) and Casey Dellacqua. But Top 20 player Francesca Schiavone was a challenge too far in the main draw first round, defeating Yuan for the loss of just five games. Not one for being easily discouraged, she proceeded to come through qualifying for her fourth WTA Tour main draw and her first at Grand Slam level, the Australian Open, with straight-sets wins over Yulia Beygelzimer of Ukraine, Elena Baltacha of Great Britain and Bethanie Mattek of the United States. In the main draw, she defeated Melinda Czink 6–4, 6–2, then faced the World No. 2 Kim Clijsters, and took six games from her; but the result in the Belgian’s favour was virtually a foregone conclusion. Still, these performances had lifted her dramatically to 108th in the world in just one month.
