Yona Metzger is one of the most popular and richest Rabbi who was born on August 4, 1953 in Haifa, Haifa District, Israel. Metzger was born at Haifa in 1953. Metzger was a chaplain in Israel Defense Forces’ 7th Armored Brigade and was promoted to the rank of captain. Metzger was ordained by the Yeshivat Kerem BeYavne Hesder yeshiva. After that, he worked as a religious teacher. Metzger was rabbi at the Tiferet Zvi Synagogue, Tel Aviv. He was then appointed as regional rabbi for northern Tel Aviv. Metzger is the author of ten books, of which two were given prizes by President Israel.

Metzger encouraged friendly relations with other religious communities. Metzger suggested the creation of a religious United Nations in Jerusalem. After mediating a well-publicized dispute between Jerusalem Haredim, the Armenian Christian community, Metzger first proposed this idea in 2004. Metzger’s plan would see the new body include representatives from all religions and not just nations. Metzger also suggested that the Dalai Lama might lead the assembly. Metzger’s idea was met with enthusiasm by the Dalai Lama, who reportedly pledged his support. Frederico Major, co-president, Alliance for Civilizations is a Spanish lobby organization for international conflict resolution.

When Mazuz asked Metzger to resign in 2005, the story initially sparked some debate over the necessity of having two Israeli Chief Rabbis at all, or of maintaining the Chief Rabbinate as an institution. Some suggested that one way of preserving the integrity and relevance of the office might be to convince the religious Ashkenazi communities of Israel to decline to hold elections to replace Metzger, should he resign. This move would have consolidated the post from two seats to one, and help eliminate one of the most public representations of the office’s perceived anachronism often cited by its critics. However, since then there has been little follow-up.

In February 2005, the Israeli police began a formal criminal investigation of Metzger regarding allegations of fraud and bribery related to benefits he received from a Jerusalem hotel. Metzger was questioned twice, and denied any wrongdoing, but suspended himself from the Rabbinical High Court in June 2005, while waiting to see whether or not the Israeli Attorney General, Menachem Mazuz, decided to indict him. No charges were brought, and Metzger and his supporters dismissed all of the accusations against him as part of an ongoing smear campaign against him.

Metzger played a key role in the easing of tensions between Jerusalem’s Haredim, Armenian Christians and Christians after an incident in Jerusalem in which a Haredi student slapped an Armenian archbishop. Metzger was also noticed in November 2005 when he visited the Memorial of Armenian Genocide and Genocide Museum. Metzger laid a wreath and made a brief speech, in which he acknowledged Armenia’s pain and stressed that Israel doesn’t officially recognize the Armenian Genocide. Metzger continued by saying that no other nation could better understand the pain of the Armenians than Jews. Metzger’s comments received positive reactions in Armenia, especially because they implied that more Israelis were changing their views on the use of the term “genocide” for the Armenians.
