Yogesh Kumar Joshi is one of the most popular and richest Military Leader who was born on January 5, 1962 in India. Gen Joshi is a Haryana native and the son of R P Joshi. He graduated from the 60th Course and was assigned Kilo “K” Squadron at National Defence Academy Khadakwasla in Pune, Maharashtra. He then attended Indian Military Academy Dehradun.

He has received the Uttam Yudh Seva Medal for leading the Fire & Fury Corps (Republic Day 2020), Ati Viisht Seva Medal(Republic Day 2016), and the Vir Chakra for his role in Operation Vijay.

He was commissioned in the 13 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles. Before his appointment as DG Infantry, he was also the Director General for Infantry and ADG Military Operations Branch at the Army HQ. He is also the colonel for the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles and the Ladakh Scouts. He was the 17th commander, XIV Corps Indian Army. He assumed the post on 31 Aug 2018. This was General Joshi’s fourth tenure with Chinese troops. He succeeded Lt. General Santosh Kumar Upadhya.

Lieutenant Colonel Yogesh K. Joshi (13 Jammu & Kashmir Rifles) was assigned the task of capturing Point 5140 in Drass Sector, during Operation Vijay. Lieutenant Colonel Joshi devised a brilliant plan to coordinate action and achieve surprise and psychological dominance over the strategically better placed enemy. He was also responsible for overseeing all preparations before the attack. Lieutenant Colonel Joshi was a great motivator for his company commanders, and he kept moving forward without regard to his safety. He displayed exceptional mental ability and was able to change battle situations with a very competent manner. Gen Joshi’s uniqueness is not only due to his command of a Brigade and a Division, but also because he has served three times in the eastern Ladakh region. He was also a Defence Attache in China from 2005 to 2008 and negotiated the details of the first India-China joint exercise, “Hand-in- Hand”, in Kunming in 2007. He also led Army talks with China.

He is the current General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Northern Command, assuming office from Lt Gen Ranbir Singh on 1 February 2020. He last served as the Chief of staff of the Northern Command, assuming the office from Lt Gen SK Sharma. Previously, he was the commander of Leh based Fire & Fury Corps.
