Yetnebersh Nigussie is one of the most popular and richest Human Rights Activist who was born on January 24, 1982 in Amhara Region, Ethiopia. She has been awarded a number of international and national awards for her work in the Anti-AIDS movement. In 2003, South Africa gave her the AMANITARE award (African Partnership for Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights of Women and Girls). This was for her strong advocacy for girls’ education. Apart from her academic career, Ms. Yetnebersh was a member of more than 20 voluntarily organized organizations. The Ethiopian National Association of the Blind Women’s Wing was the one she chaired for four years (2003-07). She was inspired by this experience to create an Ethiopian Center for Disability and Development together with other prominent Ethiopians in order to promote inclusion of people with disabilities in various development programmes, including economic empowerment. Yetnebersh, who was previously a member of the International Board of Ambassadors, is now working with LIGHT FOR THE WOND, a disability and development NGO.
Yetnebersh Nigussie lost both her eyesight and vision at the tender age of 5. This was a chance for her to escape the early marriage that was common in the Amhara region, where Yetnebersh was conceived. After attending her primary classes at Shashemane Catholic school for the blind, she enrolled in Menelik II Senior Secondary school (an inclusive school) where she studied until 12th grade. She has been involved in school academics and chaired six student clubs, including the students’ counsel. She received her undergraduate degree and master’s degrees in law from Addis Ababa University. She was active in extracurricular activities and chaired AAU Anti-AIDS Movement 2004-05. In 2006, she founded Addis Ababa University (AAU), Female Students Association. She also served as its first president.
