Ryan Bourque, born January 3, 1991, is an American ice hockey forward who plays with the Charlotte Checkers (AHL). He is the son of Ray Bourque, a Hockey Hall of Fame defenseman, and the brother of Chris Bourque (ex-NHL forward). The New York Rangers selected him in the third round (80th overall), of the NHL Entry Draft 2009. He was a four-time medalist in International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), playing for the United States. He is a versatile, fast, energetic, and tenacious forward, who is also considered strong defensively.
He was part of the USA’s 2010 Gold-medal World Junior Championship Team. He did not score any goals, but he was awarded three assists. He was accompanied by fellow Rangers’ draft picks Chris Kreider and Derek Stepan, who were also gold medal winners. He was also an alternate captain in the USA’s 2011 World Junior Championship bronze-medal winning team. He again received three assists during the tournament. He was the one who scored the game-winning goal for Team USA in the bronze-medal match. He was also named Team USA’s top player after their victory over Switzerland. He tied Chris Kreider in 2nd place for shots on goal, with 20.
On March 16, 2011, Bourque signed a three-year professional entry-level contract with the New York Rangers. Bourque was expected to join the Rangers’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Connecticut Whale, for the playoffs after the Remparts’ playoff run ended. However, the Whale’s playoffs ended prior to the Remparts’.
After the 2012–13 Whale season, he was added to the Rangers’ playoff roster.
Bourque had 19 goals and 24 assists in Quebec’s 2009-10 season, for a total score of 43 points over 44 games. Bourque’s 43 points were 10th best among QMJHL rookies. He also missed more than 20 games due to injuries or international play. In 9 playoff games, he added 10 more points. He scored 26 goals and assisted 33 times in 2010-11 for 59 points. This was despite only having played 49 games. His 59 regular season points were 3rd in the Remparts. He also ranked 5th on the team in assists and goals, even though he missed 19 games. Bourque scored 16 points in 18 QMJHL playoff games and tied for 13th place in the league at the end of the semis.
