Yassine Elghansy, the only child of Hajjaj Elghansy, was born 12 July 1990. When he was 15, he started playing football at Fayt-Manage, Hainaut. He was signed by La Louviere’s youth team, which quickly attracted the attention of other sides. He was sixteen years old when he tried out for the English football team Birmingham City FC. However, La Louviere didn’t want to transfer him because the price of the transfer was too high.

He was originally added to the youth team but he also played in the Jupiler Pro League. He was named the successor to Bryan Ruiz in 2009, after he left for FC Twente. His creativity and drive were a credit to him. Many pundits have compared him to Ruiz because of their similarity as players.

On 25 October 2010, it was revealed scouts from Celtic F.C. had watched El Ghanassy in action. His agent described him as a “magician” in an interview with STV, saying he would encourage the player to move to the Glasgow club.

On 11 July 2012, West Bromwich Albion confirmed the loan signing of El Ghanassy from Gent. He signed a season-long deal with an option to make the move permanent in West Bromwich Albion’s favour. He scored his first goal for WBA against Yeovil in the League Cup on 28 August 2012.

El Ghanassy was a skilled ball passer and he provided many assists to his teammates. However, he rarely scored. In 2009/10, he scored his first goal against Zulte warem in the Belgian League playoffs. He has been prolific since that time. His most significant contribution in recent years was his goal against FC Naftan Novopolotsk, a Belarusian soccer team in the Champions League qualifiers. Gent was able to qualify for the third round because it was the only goal scored in the game.
