He was born in Drohobych (Ukraine SSR, Soviet Union). Under-23 road race champion in 2001, Popovych turned professional in 2002 with Landbouwkrediet-Colnago, where he performed particularly strongly in the Giro d’Italia, finishing third in 2003. After joining Discovery Channel, Popovych switched his focus to the Tour de France in 2005. He won the young riders’ category in 2005 and won stage 12 of 2006. Popovych was able to move to Silence-Lotto, 2008, and then to Astana, 2009 after Discovery Channel closed its doors. Popovych raced in the 2010 and 2011 races for Team RadioShack.
Popovych was primarily a domestique in 2007 season. He helped Alberto Contador win Paris-Nice & Tour de France. After completing 33 km from the finish line, Popovych won the fifth stage of the 2007 Paris-Nice. After suffering two crashes during the race, he was considered the team leader for 2007 Giro d’Italia. However, he withdrew from the twelfth Stage. He finished eighth in the 2007 Tour de France while working with his Discovery Channel colleagues Alberto Contador, and Levi Leipheimer.
In 2008, Popovych moved to Silence–Lotto squad after Discovery Channel announced that it would cease operations at the end of 2007.
On 15 October 2009 it was reported that Popovych will move to Team RadioShack for the 2010 season.
Popovych was one of four Discovery Channel team leaders in 2006 Tour de France. He also partnered with Jose Azevedo and Paolo Savoldelli. Popovych won stage 12, despite not being among the top for overall classification in Pyrenees mountain stages. He attacked his breakaway compatriots Alessandro Ballan and Oscar Freire repeatedly. He also won stages at Vuelta a Castilla y Leon 2006 and Tour de Georgia where he was third.

After capturing 35 wins in 2000 and 2001, he was considered one the most promising riders in junior and under-23 cycling. After finishing second in the previous year, he won the UCI Road World Championships’ Under-23 Men’s race. He was also the winner of the Paris-Roubaix edition, which is for riders under 23 years old. The Ukrainian turned pro in 2002 by joining the Belgian team Landbouwkrediet-Colnago and delivered some strong showings, most notably in the Giro d’Italia where he finished third in 2003 and fifth in 2004, when he wore the pink jersey during three stages.
In 2005, he joined Discovery Channel and was considered a potential successor to Lance Armstrong. Popovych won the Volta a Catalunya in 2005, one of his greatest victories. This race is important before the Tour de France. He won the stage four time trial with the Discovery team in 2005 Tour. He also showed his potential by winning young rider classification at 2005 Tour de France. This was while Lance Armstrong won his seventh Tour de France.
Popovych was recruited as a domestique member of the 2008 Silence Lotto Tour De France team primarily to support lead rider Cadel Evans, but had a rather disappointing year, with only a 3rd place in Paris–Nice to show for. At the end of the year, it was announced he would team up with his former Discover manager Johan Bruyneel again in 2009, joining the new Astana Team.
