Sougou signed a precontract agreement and joined Liga I side CFR Cluj in May 2011. Although the move was delayed by Academica demanding EUR300,000. in compensation, the transfer was completed. The player also stated that one of his main reasons for signing was to rejoin Jorge Costa, his former manager.

Sougou finished his first year in Romania as joint-ninth top scorer with ten goals, whilst also providing several assists to help his team win the national championship for the third time in five years. In January 2012, chairman Julius Muresan revealed that the player had been given a release clause of €11 million.

Sougou scored his first goal on 30 January 2013, in a 2–1 away defeat of FC Rouen in the round of 32 of the Coupe de France. His first appearance in Ligue 1 took place on 3 February, as he featured 13 minutes in a 0–1 home loss to AS Nancy.

In the six subsequent seasons, Sougou represented Vitoria de Setubal and Leiria in the Portuguese top flight. He was at the club’s service from 2009-10 when he scored nine goals in 29 matches. This helped it reach the 11th spot. Additionally, in 2013, he disclosed that he had been close to signing with FC Porto as Andre Villas Boas was its manager. However, an injury prevented him from signing.

Sougou was born in Fissel in the M’bour Department. He began his career at AS Douanes, a Dakar-based company. At the age of 19, he moved to Portugal and signed a four-year contract for U.D. Leiria. On 29 November, he made his Primeira Liga debut. He was a substitute in the 1-0 home victory against S.L. Benfica.

Sougou made his debut in Senegal’s national team on 21 August 2007. He played the first half of a friendly draw against Ghana. He was part of the team that played in the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations.

He himself contributed with two successful strikes in two 2–1 wins in the qualifying rounds, at FC Slovan Liberec and FC Basel; late in that year, he was named by Gazeta Sporturilor as the second best foreign player in the country behind Wesley Lopes da Silva.
