Yair Golan Biography

Yair Golan is one of the most popular and richest Warrior who was born on May 14, 1962 in Rishon LeZion, Central District, Israel. Golan was drafted in the IDF in 1980. He was a paratrooper in Paratroopers Brigade. He was a soldier, a leader of a squad and participated in the 1982 Lebanon War. After graduating Officer Candidate school, he was an infantry officer and then returned to the Paratroopers Brigade in the role of a platoon leader. Golan was the Brigade’s Antitank company commander and commanded the 890 Paratroop Battalion during counter-guerrilla operations in South Lebanon and the First Intifada. He was a Battalion Commander in the IDF Officers School in 1993 and then served as Judea and Samaria Division Operations Branch Officer. He was the commander of the Eastern brigade Liaison Unit in 1996-1997 and then served as the head Operations Section in the Operations Directorate. Golan commanded Nahal Infantry Brigade during the Second Intifada. Afterwards, he commanded both the Judea and Samaria Division and the 91st Division. From 2008 to 2011, Golan was the Commander of Home Front Command. He led Operation Cast Lead. He was Commander of Israeli Northern Command in July 2011, and Deputy Chief General Staff in December 2014. Aluf Aviv Kovacavi replaced Golan in May 2017.

In January 2020, he reactivated the Democratic Choice party and became its leader. He also joined the Democratic Union to help prepare for the 2020 Israeli legislative elections.

Ehud Barak, on 26 June 2019, announced that Golan would join him in creating a new party to challenge Netanyahu in the September 2019 Israeli legislative elections. To contest the September election, he later joined the Democratic Union alliance.

Isaac Herzog, Opposition Leader, praised Golan’s “morality” and “responsibility.” Later, Golan retracts and says he didn’t intend to make a comparison between Israel and Nazi Germany. He released a statement in the which he stated that “it is an absurd and baseless comparision and I had no intention whatsoever either to draw any parallel or criticise national leadership.” The IDF is a moral arm that respects the rules and protects human dignity.

Aluf Yair Golan, Hebrew: yAyr gvln ), is a retired major-general in the Israel Defense Forces. He served as the Deputy Chief of General Staff of Israel Defense Forces. He is currently a MK of Meretz. He was previously the commander of Home Front Command, and Northern Command. In November 2016, he was succeeded as the Deputy Chief General Staff by Aviv Kochavi.
