On the 12th of February, 2010 the club signed him Beijing Guoan after Guangzhou was exiled following a match-fixing scandal. On the 4th of August, 2012 Xu was able to score from an approximate distance of 62 metres in an international match in a match against Dalian Shide, which is the longest goal ever scored in Chinese top-tier football history.
On 3 February 2016, Xu came out of retirement and joined China League One club Shenzhen FC.

Xu could have a history with Dutch club Heracles Almelo and Russian club FC Torpedo Moscow, however any deal fell through because neither club able to settle on a one million euro transfer fee. As of the 31st December 2006,, he was transferred to second-tier side Guangzhou Pharmaceutical for 3 million Yuan. In his first season, he quickly established himself as a key player in the midfield of the team and help achieve the team’s win in the league, and then be promoted into the Chinese Super League in 2007. He helped establish Guangzhou in the top league and was appointed vice-captain in the squad, however, his outspoken nature saw him critique his teammate Zhou Lin for having a poor game with Beijing Guoan F.C. On June 28th, 2009, in an 1-1 draw. This resulted in a tense players and Zhou being ostracised from the team. The outspoken Xu did not stop at his teammates and on the 24th of October, 2009 in a match when he played Qingdao Jonoon F.C. during a draw that was 0-0, He would verbally scream at the referee over his decision-making and resulted in Xu being given a suspension of five games.

Xu Liang would play for the Chinese under-20 football team. He was included in the team in the 2001 FIFA World Youth Championship in which China were eliminated in the final 16 against Argentina. Following the tournament, he got elevated to the Chinese under-23 football team . However, he was removed from the team on the 26th of January 2002 together alongside Lu Jiang and Zhang Shuai for violating team curfew rules to party in clubbing. Xu was later reinstated into the team and was a part of 2002’s 2002 Asian Games, which saw China make it to the quarterfinals.
Xu Liang started his football career at Liaoning Youth in 2001 and then moved to the top-tier club Liaoning FC’s first squad during the 2002 league season in which he played 23 times during his debut season. After making his way into his first-team, he would become an integral part of the team that saw Liaoning make it to in the semi-finals of the Chinese FA Cup in 2002. While off the field on the 6th December 2004 he was involved in the recovery of an injured woman injured in a crash involving a car in Shenyang before bringing her to the hospital. After five seasons at Liaoning the club acknowledged they were in a financial trouble and Xu was permitted to leave the club, with Beijing Guoan interested in his service, but they did not reach an agreement on an agreed upon 5.5 million Yuan transfer cost.
Xu transferred to fellow Chinese Super League side Shanghai Shenhua on 11 December 2012. After an injury plagued period with Shanghai, Xu decided to retire from football at the end of the 2014 season.
