Katarzyna Kozyra (born 1963) is an Polish video artist from Poland. She completed her German study in the University of Warsaw (1985-1988). She graduated in 1993. received her degree from her Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw where she was a student of sculpture as well as Hochshule fur Graphik und Buchkunst in Leipzig. Kozryra was awarded the Paszport Polityki award in 1997 as the most promising artist from Poland. She has been exhibiting throughout the globe since 1997 including exhibitions at Brown University and Carnegie International in the U.S.

“The Rite of Spring” (1999-2002) was a film installation inspired by choreography of Igor Stravinsky’s 1913 ballet with the same title. Kozyra employed former dancers of the Polish National Ballet who were not able to perform in this piece. Kozyra took photographs of the subjects who were elderly lying on the ground , in dancing positions, and animated their motions.

Her art was involved in a 1999 censorship incident in Poland. Her photo portrait of Slawomir Belina in a Warsaw exhibition in 2000 was also controversial for its alleged eroticism, as his anus was in the centre of the composition.

Anda Rottenberg, Director of the Zachęta National Gallery of Art in Warsaw where Kozyra first showed “Bath house” in 1997 and who also purchased the work, sparked off controversy by writing to Art Monthly in October 1998 and claiming that Kozyra’s “Bath house” and artist Tacita Dean’s 1998 “Gellert” were of the same subject: the most famous bathhouse in Budapest. Freely admitting that controversy helps in the promotion of a work, “Controversy around this work was in fact a very stimulating factor and now as the months passed Bath house has come to be regarded as classic”, Rottenberg found the coincidence “indeed amazing”. However, the works differ completely. Whereas Kozyra used hidden cameras intending to reveal the bathing women’s natural behaviour as well as challenging normal considerations of privacy, and is a multi-screen video work (see letter again), Dean had permission from the bath workers and her single screen film is concerned with the healing sulphurous waters of the baths (see Colin Gleadell, The Daily Telegraph, 1 February 2001).

“Bathhouse” (1997) considers similar subjects. Kozyra’s goal was to demonstrate the way women look in situations where no one is watching and aren’t required to conform to fashion guidelines for beauty. Kozyra was able to capture this natural look by recording her work using the camera hidden behind a curtain. Through this she showed the female body as it is and encouraged viewers to challenge their old ideals and expectations of beauty. Furthermore it made a reference to the past of art, with the works by Rembrandt as well as Jean Ingres in the opening and closing of the film.

“Pyramid of Animals” was her graduate work in 1993 that became a cult and an “object of violent controversy” in Poland in the early days. The work was comprised of taxidermied and dissected bodies of a horse cat, dog, and rooster as well as a film that depicts the murder by the animal. The theme was a reference to Grimm Brothers’ fairy story The Bremen Town Musicians, the piece focuses on human involvement in the killing of animals in industrial settings as well as the normalization of the act of murder as part of the chain of food. The piece was also described as the piece was not only “a work about animals, but a work about death, about killing, and their significance in present day culture”. Kozyra became controversial artist due to the publicity surrounding the work as well as her other work: “Blood Relationship” (1995), “Olympia” (1996), “Bathhouse” (1997)”Bathhouse” (1997), as well as “Man’s Bathhouse” (1999).

The body of her is flabby and she has sagging breasts. The wrinkles on her face are everywhere and it’s like all her teeth have disappeared. But she looks calm and serene, as if she’s resigned with her situation. All the women in the photos have something that they share – a black ribbons tied around their neck, to signify mourning and to refer to the work of Manet. The most shocking aspect isn’t presenting the female naked as it is however, it is presenting the realities of illness, life, and death. female body isn’t only something to be beautiful and admiration for the male gaze.

In 1999, she represented Poland in the 48th Venice Biennale where she won an honorable mention and commendation for video installation “Men’s Bathhouse”. In September 2011 she received the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage grant.
