He is known as Wu Jiaqing, the Taishan Shentong (“Little Genius from Taishan”). He was granted residency in 2009 and was granted the right to reside permanently in Singapore and was later refused in 2010.. Before, he was called Wu Chia-ching Wu Chia-ching was changed to his spelling after relocation into mainland China.

In 2011, Wu applied for and was granted citizenship from China. People’s Republic of China. In truth, Wu did this, so that he could compete in international competitions. Wu said the decision was taken in order to improve his athletic performance and should not be considered as political. In April of 2011 Wu did not give up Republic of China nationality. Republic of China Deputy Minister of the Interior, Lin Tzu-ling said “An ROC national who wants to give up his or her citizenship must go through certain procedures. So far, I do not think we have received any application from him (Wu) to do so”. The Minister added it was “As long as he is still an ROC national, he will be drafted into the military if he comes back to Taiwan.” The Republic of China’s Act Governing Relations between the People of the Taiwan Area and the Mainland Area stipulates that both the “Taiwan Area” and the “Mainland Area” are parts of the ROC and that”Mainland Area” is a part of the ROC “Mainland Area” is legally defined as “ROC territory outside of the Taiwan Area.” In addition the law does not recognize PRC citizenship, and define PRC citizen to be “people of the Mainland Area” who “have household registration in the Mainland Area.” Article 9-1 of the law bans “the people of the Taiwan Area” from getting household registration within “the Mainland Area,” anyone who breaks the law are prohibited from voting and from serving in public office, and their registration as a household member within “the Taiwan Area” is cancelled.

He was second to Darren Appleton in the inaugural WPA World Ten-ball Tournament in 2008, winning the prize for runner-up of US$40,000. In the semi- finals at the tournament, Wu had defeated Demosthenes Pulpul from the Philippines 11-8 with a cue stick he borrowed.
