The integrity checks will be performed by regional associations. On May 24, 2013 the man was elected to the UEFA Executive Committee and on 24 March 2015, he was elected into the FIFA Council.

Niersbach played in the youth football squad that was part of Dusseldorfer SC 99 and went to high school at the Gorres-Gymnasium in Dusseldorf. After high school, he studied German studies and started volunteering in 1973 for the news agency Sport-Informations-Dienst. From 1973 to 1988, he was writing reports for this agency, and also served as an editor for association soccer and ice hockey, reporting on many World as well as European Championships and Olympic Games. On the 15th of September, 2006 the DFB appointed him as the successor to Bernd Pfaff, director of the DFB responsible for managing teams, young players, and coaching. He was closely associated in this role with Germany national soccer coach Oliver Bierhoff and DFB sporting director Matthias Sammer. In the DFB Bundestag in Mainz on 26 October 2007 Niersbach was named the successor in the role of Horst Schmidt. Schmidt as the new Secretary General. Niersbach is the highest-paid employee of the DFB.
On 9 November 2015, he resigned as DFB president amidst reports about alleged bribery surrounding the 2006 FIFA World Cup. In March 2016, the FIFA Ethics Committee opened formal proceedings against Niersbach regarding the awarding of the 2006 World Cup.
