Wolfgang Kaim (born 13 May 1951 in Bad Vilbel, Germany) is a German scientist and chemist. He is in charge of the coordination chair chemical chemistry in the University of Stuttgart. He is the co-author of the internationally acclaimed book Bioinorganic Chemistry that was honored in the Literature Award of the German Chemical Industry.

Kaim’s interdisciplinary research covers the areas of radical stabilization by metal coordination (‘non-innocent ligands’), coenzyme models, the extension of mixed-valence chemistry, electron transfer effects on M-C and M-H bonds, the crystallization of new organic radicals and the electron transfer properties of boron compounds, as well as spectroelectrochemistry in the IR, UV/VIS/near- infrared regions as spectroscopic probes for electron transfer sites and the consequences of electron transfer or charge transfer on structure and bonding, EPR spectroscopy as a less common but highly useful methodology and CV (cyclic voltammetry).

In 2014 he was awarded Alfred Stock Memorial Prize by Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker.

Kaim was a student of chemistry, physics and maths at both his home at the University of Frankfurt and the University of Konstanz. His diploma thesis on physical organic chemistry was overseen by E. Daltrozzo (1974). He began his work on the principal group radicals within Hans Bock’s lab at the University of Frankfurt, where his doctorate was awarded in 1978. Following a postdoctoral fellowship working with F. A. Cotton from Texas A&M University, supported by the postdoctoral Liebig Fellowship, he completed his habilitation in organic chemical chemistry in the year 1982. (“Coordination Chemical Reduction of Heterocycles”). Kaim continued his research activities with the University of Frankfurt with a Winnacker Fellowship and an Heisenberg Fellowship. In 1987, he transferred into Stuttgart to the University of Stuttgart to take an appointment as chair for coordination chemistry, a position he holds until today.

Kaim has been an adjunct instructor at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb (US/IL 2003) He has also been a guest professor in The Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou (China 2005) and visiting professors at Universidad de Chile in Santiago (Chile in 2006), University of Concepcion (Chile 2007) as well as The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (India 2008).
