Willie Maddren is one of the most popular and richest English-Football Player who was born on January 11, 1951 in Billingham, United Kingdom. William Dixon Maddren (January 11 1951 – August 30 2001) was an English professional footballer and manager. He was a one-club player, and was a professional player for all his team appearances with Middlesbrough from 1968 to 1979. He was later manager of his team from 1984 until 1986.

in 1995 Maddren found himself diagnosed in 1995 with the fatal muscle-wasting disease known as motor neurone disorder (MND). He began to campaign for MND research and has raised more than PS200,000, which included PS40,000 in His memoir Extra Time. A charity match was organized in Riverside Stadium. Riverside Stadium between Middlesbrough and Internazionale.

In the year that Malcolm Allison became Middlesbrough manager in 1982, Maddren was sent back to Ayresome Park to work as a physiotherapist. In the meantime, Boro had been struggling to stay in the Second Division. Allison was dismissed on the 24th of March 1984 then was succeeded with Jack Charlton as caretaker manager along with Maddren as assistant manager. This new team of managers was able to prevent relegation, as well. Maddren got promoted to the the post of manager before the season’s close. In his debut season as a full-time manager 1984-85 Middlesbrough suffered and escaped losing their place on the last game of the campaign. The following season, Maddren was dismissed with only 13 games left and was being replaced by coach Bruce Rioch. Boro were dropped at the close year to Third Division and the club was put into liquidation.

Maddren was first introduced on April 12 1969 in a match against Bury and scored a goal, and breaking his nose. Although he began his Boro career as a striker, Maddren was primarily a central defensive player. In the 1970-71 season , Maddren was a regular as a key player in the Boro defense. The year 1971 saw Middlesbrough director Stan Anderson purchased Mansfield Town central defender Stuart Boam to create a defensive partnership with Maddren. In 1973, following repeated inability to make it to the former First Division, Anderson left Middlesbrough and was replaced by World Cup winner Jack Charlton.

In the 1973-74 campaign, Middlesbrough won the traditional Second Division finishing 15 points ahead of second Luton Town (Under the old points system, there were 2 points per victory.) They were elevated into the First Division on 23 March 1974. They finished the season with just 30 goals and keeping 25 clean sheets over 42 games. Maddren’s final game with Boro was on the 3rd of September 1977, against West Bromwich Albion. He was just 26. Maddren was suffering from a chronic knee injury. He often played sports when suffering from pain. The operation failed and he was forced to retire in 1979.

He died on 30 August 2000 at a hospice in Stockton-on-Tees, aged 49.
